The Wrecks Campground, Moreton Island
$Tent-only camping five minutes' walk from the Tangalooma wrecks
Walk off the barge with the tent on your back and pitch it a few minutes up the beach from the Tangalooma wrecks. The Wrecks is a 21-site tent-only campground on Mulgumpin's sheltered western shore, booked through Mulgumpin Camping, which the Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation runs. There is no parking and no road in, so camper trailers, caravans and rooftop tents are out. Sites have hybrid toilets, cold showers, bins and untreated tank water. No open fires, no generators. The snorkelling is straight off the sand in front of you.

Local tips
Stuff your mates would tell you.
Book the barge and the camping permit separately and before you leave, because nobody registers you on arrival
Bring a hand trolley or plan two trips, as you carry every bit of gear from the landing yourself
Treat the tank water before drinking it, or pack what you need for the whole stay
Pack a gas stove, since open fires and generators are both banned at this campground
Telstra is the only network with usable reception, and the nearest doctor is back on the mainland
Carry in every meal, since there is no shop at the campground and the nearest one is a 4WD run up the beach to Bulwer
